I suppose that the correspondence between the two numbers is the essence of what makes the golden ratio so fascinating and, at the same time, so elusively perplexing. (At least for non-mathematicians like myself!) Somewhat minor, but what I found most interesting was the fact that phi - 1 = 1 / phi.
