Writing for Slate, Farhad Manjoo lucidly explains why typing two spaces after a period is not only completely unnecessary, but a crime, in fact (typographically speaking).

Just think of all the unnecessary stress inflicted upon one's right thumb tapping on the space bar that many more times in the course of a day, week, lifetime. It's got to be bad for our healtcare system.
